The piano accompanies the fixed media, adding a multilayered texture to the work.

"In Nematocyst Variations, the strict laws of serialism mirror the biological imperatives of the nudibranch. Just as the animal recycles the stinging cells of its prey for its own defense, this piece 'recycles' the same 12 notes, constantly reordering them to create armor, color, and movement."
